Syllabus, Texts, Grading
PREREQUISITES:
- Math 120 (Precalculus), or
- Math 130 (Mathematics for Teachers: Number Systems), or
- Math 140 (Mathematics for Teachers: Elementary Geometry), or
- Any 200+ mathematics course.
TEXTs:
- Graphs and Optimization by David. M. Clark (class handouts)
- The Mathematical Experience, Study Edition, by Philip J. Davis., Reuben Hersh, Elena Anne Marchisotto
EXAMS:
- There will be one 75 min. Midterm Exam (100 points) during the semester.
- The FINAL EXAM (150 points) will be held in our usual classroom, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, on WEDNESDAY May 7, 2009.
PORTFOLIOS:
- Neatly written portfolio containing a complete and final solution to each of the 71 numbered problems
- Can be submitted for revision and correction at any time.
- Will be collected to review from time to time, and returned.
SHORT ESSAYS:
- Usually 2-3 pages
- Type, using only one side of standard 8½ x 11 paper. When due, put it on my desk at the start of class.
- Late assignments of any kind are NOT accepted, except by prior arrangement.
GRADES:
- 50% -- Portfolios
- 15% -- Short Essays
- 15% -- Midterm Exam (75 min.; 100 pts)
- 20% -- Final Exam (150 pts)
- I use grading software to provide grade reports. At the end of the semester before the Final Exam is recorded, I will drop your "most damaging" score. from among the Essays.
