Dr. Chen joined the UMKC faculty in Fall 1995. In 2001 she was a Faculty Honoree at the UMKC Convocation and Awards Ceremony, and in 2004 was honored at the Activity & Program Council's UMKC Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, having been nominated by students she teaches, advises, or mentors. In 2008 she was promoted to full Professor and elected Chair of the department. In 2014 she was selected as a 2014 Fellow of American Statistical Association (ASA) for her outstanding contributions to the statistical profession. Nominated by their peers, ASA Fellows are members of established reputation who have made outstanding contributions in some aspect of statistical work. Given annually, this is a great honor, as the number of recipients is limited to no more than one-third of 1% of the ASA membership.
Dr. Chen does research in statistical change point analysis and has published a research monograph on this subject. From 1996 to 2004 she also acted as a statistical consultant for 5 local law firms, providing statistical analyses in 10 cases. In addition to change point analysis, her research interests also include genomic data analysis and distribution theory that characterizes gene expression data. She was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for her interdisciplinary research in modeling genetic data. She currently conducts research in statistical modeling of DNA copy number data using change point analysis.
