Martha taught Mathematics at Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in Kansas City from 1987-2008, variously at the Penn Valley and Maple Woods campuses. Her courses ranged from Basic Math through Differential Equations, she was the Mathematics Department Division Chair for three years at Maple Woods, was Principal Investigator for an NSF (National Science Foundation) grant to improve developmental and technical math at the Business Technology Center and Penn Valley. In the Spring of 2005 and 2007, she was an Adjunct Lecturer for the UMKC School of Education, teaching future teachers to teach College Algebra. From 1982-1987, she was Assistant, then Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Programming, at DeVry Institute of Technology, Kansas City, MO, and previously from 1978-1982, was an Adjunct Lecturer in Mathematics at UMKC. Martha is also the author of Basic Math and Introductory Algebra text books published locally through MCC for use at Penn Valley (with support from the National Science Foundation, 2003-2005). She has written a total of 7 Math Lessons for "Illuminations" (an NCTM website providing activities and lessons for K12 teachers use). She is the author of Preparing For Algebra by Building the Concepts, Prentice Hall, 1998, a textbook for Basic Mathematics which incorporates hands-on activities, and the use of calculators, and finally was one of three authors of Interactive Math, Prentice Hall, 1999, for which the lead author was Elaine Martin-Gay. Martha is also an experienced and active musician who plays 12 instruments and regularly performs around Kansas City.
